This past weekend we have organized our very first Weekend Walk! It was great to see the many happy faces in our community and we hope everyone had a good time!
To recap, Weekend Walks are multi-block events on commercial corridors that promote the use of streets as public space. Community-based organizations apply to close commercial streets and provide programming that highlights local businesses and New York City’s unique neighborhoods.
Business improvement districts, cultural organizations, local merchants associations and community groups host Weekend Walks as a fun way to highlight local businesses and neighborhood resources. They create wonderful opportunities for New Yorkers to gather and view their neighborhoods in a new light.
We were lucky enough to have a beautiful day for our walk. We had several activities for kids, including: bouncy castles, a pirate ship ride, coloring and craft activities and a science pop up organized by the Uni Project. We also had live music performed by Cassandra Nunez and Victor Rosso courtesy of Pop's Cocina.
This walk could not have been possible if it was not for the numerous people and organizations who were involved. We would like to give a special thanks to: Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society, Woodhaven Residents' Block Association, Greater Woodhaven Development Corp., our BID members, city officials, all the businesses who took part in the walk and the officers of the 102nd Precinct, ensuring we had a safe event.
