On July 28, 2019, the Woodhaven Business Improvement District (BID) successfully held its first Community Cleanup! With help from community members, merchants, the Woodhaven Historical Society, the Block Association, Community Board 9 and Councilman Robert Holden, we were able to clean from Dexter Court and Jamaica Avenue all the way down to 85th Street. Cleaning involved sweeping, raking and picking up litter, in conjunction with the graffiti removal service we hired.
The day was concluded with some appetizing grub down at Sal's Pizzeria. The BID attained its goals for the cleanup--shining light on Jamaica Avenue's litter plight, creating a sense of mindfulness among those who populate the avenue, bringing people together and of course improving the quality of the avenue.
The cleanup even received press coverage from a number of local newspapers. It was a productive and noteworthy day for both Jamaica Avenue inhabitants and the BID.
We look forward to conducting more community cleanups in the future!
